Maria Johnson, At a Glance

Maria Johnson started her career in the education field 28 years ago. She initially trained as a primary school teacher and wanted to work with children. Over the years, she realized there was a real need for change in education, and she opened her own business. Today, Ms. Johnson successful runs multiple school locations under her company, Little School, and looks to expand into other regions in the world.

Ms. Johnson’s company looks at education in a different perspective. Its takes a holistic approach and believes in educating socially and emotionally in order to develop the children’s ability to investigate and explore, as well as become confident learners. Little School incorporates chartered curriculum, which is the leader in education. For its exceptional program, Little school won the award for Best Small to Medium Business through the Regional Wellington Business Awards in 2012.

Ms. Johnson was also recognized for her contributions to education. She earned the title of Wellington Business Woman of the Year, was a finalist for the Education for the Next Women of the Year Award, and was one of 16 finalists for Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & Young.

She earned a Bachelor of Education and a diploma in teaching primary at The University of Waikato. Ms. Johnson stays abreast of changes and advancements in her field through her affiliation with CIVIL, the Early Childhood Council, Life Education Trust, and New Zealand Global Women.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Ms. Johnson enjoys spending time with her family, exercising, and gardening.
